Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Miss
Hodgins and I am your child’s new teacher. I am very excited to be a part of
such a lovely class and school community! I had the privilege of supplying at
St. Stephen numerous times last year. During this time, I was able to teach
almost every student in the school. I hope that this will help to make the
transition for your child a bit easier since I am a familiar face and I taught
many of them at some point last year.
This past week was
very busy for your child! On Wednesday we started assessments in both Language
and Math. In Language, we did our first CASI for the year. CASI is a way for teachers
to assess students’ reading and reading comprehension. A CASI consists of
students reading a short story and answering several questions pertaining to
the story they have just read. In Math, we made WANTED posters. Your child
needed to create 2 different 4-digit numbers using the four digits I had
written on the board. Once they created their numbers they needed to show me
how many different ways they could represent each number. This will show me what
your child knows about representing numbers in multiple ways and if we need to
continue practicing this skill before we move on to our next lesson.
As well, this past
week Mme Mathieu and I have been working on updating the class blog. The blog
looks very similar to the class’ previous blog, however, it has a new web
address (http://fabfours4.blogspot.ca/)
and you may notice a few slight changes. One change is that there is now a
French page which you can access by clicking the link on the right-hand side. I
will continue to post videos and games to help your child develop the necessary
skills in Language and Math.
If you have a
Twitter account, I invite you to follow us (@MissHodgins)
as one student from the class will be Tweeting each day. The purpose of the
class Twitter account is so that students can share something that they did or
learned that day.
This month, we will
be continuing to work on many of the skills your child learned last month. In
Math, we will be focusing on whole numbers, addition, subtraction, and
patterning. In Language, we will be focusing on identifying an author`s message
and main idea, making connections, and descriptive writing (including comparing
and contrasting). Although many of these concepts may not be new to your child,
we will be spending some time reviewing before we move on to further develop these
skills. We will also be continuing with the class prayer after lunch recess and
the incorporation of our Catholic faith in our everyday studies.
Please do not
hesitate to contact me (either by phone or a note sent to school with your
child) should you have any questions or concerns!
